Objective. Check that the equalization process for the empathy attribute is fulfilled between two university venues in the dentistry students of the San Sebastián University (Chile). Material and methods. The Jefferson Medical Empathy Scale was applied to measure empathy and its components in dental students of the San Sebastián University in two sites (Santiago and Concepción, Chile). The comparisons were made using a Bifactorial ANOVA (Model III), estimation of the possible growth potential and regression equations. Results. It was found that there are differences for the Taking Patient's Perspective component between the venues and differences between all the components of the empathy when the same genre was compared between venues. Conclusion. Empirical evidence shows that the equalization process is not complete. This study is of national and Latin American importance for three reasons: a) many universities in Chile and Latin America have university campuses where the same undergraduate courses are taught, b) there are no equalization evaluations of empathy in Latin America, and c) a possible methodology is proposed to evaluate the compliance of the equalization.

RESUMO

Abstract Objective: Diagnosis of the empathie situation in the physiotherapy students of the Simón Bolívar University. Barranquilla. Colombia. Material and methods: Transversal study. Empathy levels were measured in 430 students along with the reliability of the data. The mean and deviation were estimated in two factors: Gender and Courses. The data were processed using a bifactorial variance analysis (model III), calculated the effect size, the power of the test and the Possible Growth Potential of the empathy and of each of its components considering the gender. The level of significance was α<0.05 and β>0.80. The SPSS 22.0 program was used. Results: There are differences between courses but not between gender. The differences between courses were observed in empathy in general and two of its components and all possible growth potential were positive. Conclusions: The empathic decline model is not met, there are no differences between the genders and the factors studied explain the empathic behavior observed. The characteristics indicated constitute the diagnosis of the empathic situation and constitute a guide to construct an intervention.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate empathy in medical students of the Evangelical University, Republic of El Salvador. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in which empathy levels, as well as the reliability of the data, were measured in 640 students. The mean and standard deviation were estimated in two factors: gender and courses studied. The data were processed using bi-factorial variance analysis (modeliii), calculating the effect size, power of the test, and the possible growth potential of the empathy and of each of its components considering the gender. The level of significance was α≤.05 and ß≥0.80. The SPSS 22.0 statistics program was used. RESULTS: Differences were found between courses and gender. The differences between courses in empathy are due to values by males in specific components. The model of decline in empathy and in the component, compassionate care, is not fulfilled. CONCLUSIONS: The levels of empathy between the genders were higher in males than in females, and similar in the compassionate care component. This is not consistent with the idea that women have higher levels of empathy than the men. There are differences in the behaviour of the means depending on the course and gender, and the empathy decline model is fulfilled only in two of its components. The characteristics indicated constitute the diagnosis of the empathy situation and constitute a guide to construct an intervention.

Objective. To compare empathic orientation among medical students from three schools of medicine in Colombia and one in the Dominican Republic. Material and Methods. Empathic orientation of medical students was measured using the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy (JSPE), Spanish version for students (the "S" version) validated in Mexico and Chile, and culturally adapted to Colombia and the Dominican Republic. Data were compared using a three-factor analysis of variance (model III) and a discriminant analysis. Results. No differences in empathic orientation were observed among courses and between sexes, but differences were found in schools of medicine considered as a unit in each studied country. Conclusions. Empathic orientation levels tend to reduce as courses advance. This was observed in both male and female students and in all schools analyzed.
